When a dish is so delicious, you might think it takes a lot of ingredients. Not true for our ultra-easy biscuit and gravy breakfast casserole.
Biscuits: Just one can of our Pillsbury™ Grands!™ Southern Homestyle Buttermilk Biscuits is all you’ll need to top this comforting dish.
Sausage: Pork breakfast sausage provides a rich herb and spice flavor, along with enough fat to make the casserole’s delicious gravy.
Milk: While you can use low-fat milk for this recipe, we like the ultra-creaminess that whole milk provides. We don’t recommend nonfat as it doesn’t make a rich enough gravy.
Other Ingredients You’ll Need: Butter, all-purpose flour, salt, and pepper.
You’ll only need a few basic pieces of equipment to make this quick and easy sausage and gravy casserole.
Glass or Ceramic Baking Dish: A 13x9-inch glass or ceramic baking dish works perfectly for this recipe. Not only is it just the right size, but it also allows the biscuit casserole to cook through without burning the bottom.
Skillet: A large, 12-inch nonstick skillet will be plenty of room to make the sausage gravy for this dish.
Other Cookware You’ll Need: Wooden spoon, slotted spoon, knife, cutting board, measuring cups and spoons.
This sausage and gravy casserole comes together in just a few easy steps.
In a nonstick skillet, cook the sausage, breaking up the big clumps with the back of a spoon, for about 8 to 10 minutes or until cooked through. Use a slotted spoon to lift the sausage out of the drippings and into the baking dish.
Add a touch of butter to the drippings. Then, stir in the flour, salt, and pepper which will thicken and season the gravy. Slowly stir in the milk and cook until simmering and thickened. Pour the gravy over the sausage in the baking dish.
Use a knife or kitchen shears to cut the biscuits into quarters, and place on top of the sausage mixture.
Bake the casserole for about 30 minutes or until bubbly and golden brown.
We’ve heard from you that it’s easy to turn this into a one-pan biscuits and gravy casserole by leaving the sausage and gravy in the ovenproof skillet, topping with the biscuits, and placing the skillet in the oven to bake. So smart!
Other users like to mix in some hot sausage into the gravy to kick up the flavor. You can also make a more traditional version of this classic comfort food with our unbeatable sausage gravy and biscuits recipe.
Round out your biscuits and gravy casserole brunch with a few of our other popular recipes. We love to serve these easy oven-roasted potatoes alongside, as well as our roasted Brussels sprouts.
If you’re lucky enough to have leftover biscuits and gravy casserole, here’s how to store and reheat.
Transfer your cooled leftovers to an airtight container, or keep them in the original baking dish, covering it tightly with plastic wrap or aluminum foil. Store your leftovers in the fridge for up to 3 or 4 days.
We don’t recommend freezing this casserole as the topping will get gummy in the thawing process.
Place the leftovers in an oven-safe dish, cover them with foil, and place in a 350°F oven to heat until they’re steaming hot and at least 165°F in the center.
We love hearing from our users, especially when it’s about how much they love our recipes which definitely is the case with our biscuits and gravy casserole recipe.
You’ve told us how easy it is to follow the steps in the recipe, and the flavor is so comforting. We’ve also heard how users are making the dish their own by using other types of Pillsbury™ biscuits or substituting hot sausage for the milder breakfast sausage. You also let us know that this dish is a crowd-pleaser and always a hit at gatherings and potlucks.

Heat oven to 350°F. Spray 13x9-inch (3-quart) baking dish with cooking spray.

In 12-inch nonstick skillet, cook sausage 8 to 10 minutes over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until browned and thoroughly cooked.

Using slotted spoon, transfer sausage to baking dish.

Add butter to drippings in skillet; melt over medium heat. Add flour, salt, and pepper; cook and stir 1 to 2 minutes or until thickened and beginning to brown.

Stir in milk; heat to simmering, stirring frequently. Cook and stir 1 to 3 minutes or until thickened.

Pour gravy evenly over sausage in dish.

Separate dough into 8 biscuits. Cut each biscuit into fourths.

Top sausage mixture with biscuit pieces.

Bake 26 to 30 minutes or until thoroughly heated and biscuits are golden brown. Let stand 5 minutes before serving.
Pillsbury™ Flaky Layers Biscuits can also be used in this recipe for a flakier texture and more buttery flavor.
If you’d like a stronger sage flavor in your sausage gravy, just add 1/2 teaspoon dried sage to the sausage as it’s browning.
